What’s up guys, today we are going to make this killer NED shrimp lure, well kind of a shrimp, that I’ve been working on. I’ve been working on this NED to throw in the marshes in Texas and this is where I am currently in the process. I wanted to share this technique in Fusion 360 that I used to design this because I think it’s really cool and you’ll have a lot of different uses for it. It’s great to make baits like I’ve made right here or when you need legs and fins and arms and that kind of stuff. So let’s jump right into Fusion 360.
How to Make This Lure in Fusion 360
All right guys, so what I love about this technique is it is really simple, we’re only going to use two commands. We’re going to do a sketch with some lines and then we’re going to sweep that along those lines, so it’s pretty basic. I’m going to start by working top down so I’m going to create a sketch on this plane, and again the plane doesn’t really matter you just want to make sure that you can understand it. I’m going to draw a lone and I’m going to make this a construction line. I’m going to click in the middle here and I’m going to bring it up and what I want to use this line for is to keep me honest about the overall length of my bait.
So I’m going to make this NED small, let’s say three inches, so I’m going to type in 3 I N. I usually work in millimeters because I’m 3D printing, but you can always type in inches and Fusion 360 will convert to millimeters for you. The next thing I’m going to do is draw a fit point spline. I’m going to turn off my construction line, start here in the middle and I’m going to come straight up to HERE. Then I’m going to fork off to my inline on my construction line here. You can now see that blue line and that’s how I know it’s basically the three inch length and it looks pretty good. Now I don’t want this bow in here so what I do is I have the escape key, come down to this bottom point here and grab one of these handles. I want to make this straight and you can also do this by clicking on it and doing a horizontal vertical constraint which will make it straight. I can do the same thing with that guy and that guy so now both of these are straight up. There’s still a little bit of a bend in there but that’s not going to do anything harmful to our bait. So this is the path that my body is going to taker and this is what I will use, again, to keep me honest on length and when we flip it over to make our other tail.
So then what we want to do is we want to go the front view and I’m going to draw my shape. To do that I’m going to start a sketch on the front plane and you can do any shape you want, I find a polygon is a lot of fun and I’ll show you why. I just click here, bring it out and we’ll keep it at six sides. One thing you want to know about this measurement here is it’s the radius so you’re going to want to make sure you double it to make your overall size of your lure. I want to keep this relatively small so I’m going to do one measurement at 4.8 so when doubled it’ll be close to 10 millimeters. Now we have this polygon and I could have made it any number of sides but we’re just going to keep it at six today. You can even do triangles at three sides if you want to. Let me just click finish sketch and now here’s where the magic happens.
I’m going to go and create a sweep, and the sweep command is going to ask me for a profile and a path. The profile is the front of the bait and the path is our curved line. What you want to do is change the taper angle to a negative and you can just eyeball it, just start small and work your way up. It changes dramatically the higher up you go and you just want to make sure you can keep it this fine texture. Another interesting thing is that twist angle, so I can do a 360 and it will do a full rotation all the way around. This is how we get these kind rib-like patterns on this bait. I’ll click OK and there we have one half of our bait. We’ll go ahead and click this front face here and put our fillet on. I press the F key, make it at one millimeter and it’s good.
Now what I’m going to do is I’m going to mirror this across that other line. So I’m going to go up to the task bar and create a mirror and we want to choose to mirror bodies. So we’re going to select this body and our mirror plane is going to be this mirror plane here. Then we get a shape that looks kind of like THIS so you get a mixing of the brings here which I think makes a cool design. We want to click join and we click OK. It’s going to take a while because it’s complex geometry but you’ll get this when it’s done. Again, these little divots and things I think look pretty cool. That’s basically it, you can make your tails whatever you want, what I did for the one you saw is I added a sphere and I came in here, clicked on this plane, clicked on the middle of that and just a three millimeter sphere on there. It probably would be smart to do that before you mirror because you can mirror it easier that way. If not, you can just create another one on the other side which isn’t a problem. That’s all there is to it, super simple.
Using Sweep Command to Add Legs to Lures
Now, I also use this when making other legs and appendages so I want to show you that real quick. What we can do is once we have this body in place, we can make another sketch and the trick here is to get it fairly deep in the body. I can come up here and click and pull my fit point spline here to come out until I’m okay with it then hit finish sketch. I’m going to create a new sketch on this side plane and what you probably want to do right now is come over here and turn off this body because it’s in my way and makes it difficult to see. Then we’ll make an ellipse.
I’ll show you guys another technique I like to use for fins and legs and things. Come out to whatever length you want to, probably at least one millimeter or more to use for 3D printing. I’m going to finish sketch, leave the body off and we’re just going to do another sweep and this one we will probably leave without twisting the path but still put a little taper on there. So this one I just swept and I’m going to turn my body back on so we can see what it looks like. Go to the top, it’ll want to cut it but we just say new body because that makes it easier for us to mirror. Then we just do the same trick we did last time and again you’d want to add whatever you want on the end of this before you do this mirror piece. We’re just going to mirror this body across this mirror plane and then we say join and we combine these bodies. So the trick to those is to make sure you start the line deep inside your bait so it doesn’t start right on the edge which would keep it from connecting properly.
